
Figure 1.   Construction of LWC profiles. Black curve shows the
adiabatic LWC profile computed from the mean TOGA COARE sounding. This
curve was cut off (by h) and scaled (by f) to construct LWC profiles, and
thus 3D LWC fields, in order to create both the lookup tables and the
retrieved cloud fields. Red curve shows an example LWC profile, with a
cloud thickness (h) of 2250 m and an "adiabatic fraction" (f) of 0.6.
Tick marks show the height levels used in the LWC grid. Cloud thickness
is measured above the lifting condensation level of 678 m.
