Conclusions

• Submillimeter radiometry is a technique for remote sensing cirrus clouds in new and unique way.

• The JPL Submillimeter-Wave Cloud Ice Radiometer was designed for accurate determination of cirrus ice water path (IWP) and median mass particle size (Dme).

• The SWCIR has 10 channels at 183, 325, 448, and 643 GHz and scans zenith to near nadir on the DC-8.

• Receivers use room temperature Schottky mixers appropriate for space instruments.

• Extensive simulations show retrievals are accurate for much cirrus (IWP>10 g/m2, Dme>75 Üm, T<-30 C).
