Submillimeter radiometry is a technique for remote sensing cirrus clouds in new and unique way.
The JPL Submillimeter-Wave Cloud Ice Radiometer was designed for accurate determination of cirrus ice water path (IWP) and median mass particle size (Dme).
The SWCIR has 10 channels at 183, 325, 448, and 643 GHz and scans zenith to near nadir on the DC-8.
Receivers use room temperature Schottky mixers appropriate for space instruments.
Extensive simulations show retrievals are accurate for much cirrus (IWP>10 g/m2, Dme>75 Üm, T<-30 C).
