ASTEX Radar Cloud Visualization

The 2D radiative transfer results for the ASTEX clouds are visualized by showing the extinction, higher order rms, and mean radiance fields. The higher order rms is the rms of the nondiffusive spherical harmonic terms normalized by the mean radiance. The mean radiance plot also has vectors showing the net flux in X and Z.

There are four different types of radiative transfer shown for four clouds. Three set of images are for 2D radiative transfer, but with different extinction fields: 2D) the radar derived extinction field, UPA) vertically uniform extinction with the same optical depth, and BUMP) vertically uniform extinction, but with the original cloud top geometry. The final set of images (IPA) is for independent pixel transfer on the original 2D extinction field. Results are shown for overhead sun (mu0=1) and a solar zenith angle of 60 degrees (mu0=0.5).
